Singapore Confirm Changes for F1 Circuit

The Singapore Grand Prix officials have decided to bring some changes to their F1 track in order to improve the show next year. Despite being hailed by most teams and drivers as a great success, the Asian circuit will feature some minor changes aimed to improve overtaking opportunities and increase drivers' safety when entering and exiting the pit lane.

As announced by Singapore's technical and race operations director Michael McDonough, the circuit will not only reshape some of its corners but will also be resurfaced between turns 5 and 7. Several drivers complained last year of the bumpy surface in that particular section, urging the organizers to change it for the future.

Turns 13 and 14 were modified to increase overtaking possibilities, meaning that the former will be made faster and the latter slower (therefore leading to bigger braking zone). Also, following drivers' feedback last year in terms of pit lane entry and exit, a new entry will be built for the 2009 race, while the exit will emerge at Turn 2.

“While the circuit and the event exceeded expectations around the world, as with any brand new event, there are always things which we now know we can do better. Minor modifications are proposed on the track, at Turns One, 13 and 14 in order to improve overtaking opportunities whilst the main changes will be to the Pit Entry and Pit Exit to provide added margins of safety for cars entering and leaving the pit lane,” confirmed McDonough.

In addition to the aforementioned changes, Turn One of the circuit will feature a more sharper design, therefore forcing the drivers to brake sooner than in 2008. Also, the first corner will feature new kerbs to prevent drivers from going wide.
