Silvio Berlusconi’s Sail-Assisted Superyacht Morning Glory Can Now Be Yours

If superyachts could tell stories, kids wouldn’t be allowed to listen in to those this one has to tell. Morning Glory, the superyacht owned by former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi, aka Il Cavaliere, has been listed for sale.

Delivered on commission in 1993 to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, Morning Glory was sold to Silvio Berlusconi in 1999 for a reported price of $7.2 million. It has since seen considerable upgrades and a complete rebuild in 2010, and a more recent refitting in 2016 / 2017.

The 48.2m (158.1ft) superyacht is the second in the 48m series from the Perini Navi shipyard, now boasting 850-hp MAN diesels and generators, in addition to the 990sqm (10,645sqft) of easily-handled sails. It is listed with Burgess at $11 million.

With accommodations for 8 guests in 4 suites and additional quarters for a crew of 8, Morning Glory is luxurious and inviting at the same time. Furnished in rich, warm wood and Mediterranean blue, it includes a full-beam owner’s suite with its own master study, and his and hers bathrooms. There’s also a marble fireplace, a spiral staircase and a formal dining area, in addition to dedicated sundecks. No pool or gym, though.

With a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, Morning Glory can reach top speeds of 14.5 knots and has a range of 4,900 miles at a cruising speed of 10 knots. Sailing by wind power alone delivers double-digit performance, and that should be a hot selling point for the more environmentally-friendly millionaires out there.

During Berlusconi’s ownership, Morning Glory was mostly seen in the Caribbean, and the French and Italian Rivieras. If you know anything of Il Cavaliere’s romantic exploits, if we can call them that, you have an idea of the kind of rich history this superyacht comes with. If it’s still not enough for you, know that it was also the reported wedding venue for Rupert Murdoch and his third wife Wendy Deng, back in 1999.
