Silly Mazda RX-8 Owner Thinks His Car Has 4 Cylinders

Today we want to show you a major case of rotary power fallen into the wrong hands and it all has to do with a Mazda RX-8 that’s up for grabs on Craigslist. Be prepared for some mild amusement folks.

This is a 2004 RX-8 and while the owner doesn’t tell its story, this was clearly an interesting one, since the ad states the vehicle only has 143 miles (km) on its odometer. Judging by what we can see in the ad’s images, the car seems to be in mint condition. It does need a quick interior clean, but both the exterior and the cabin appear to be in excellent shape. So far, there seems to be no issue here.

Nevertheless, checking out the ad’s details reveals the owner thinks his RX-8 has... four cylinders, or, to put it in his words “4 cilinders”. Last time we checked, the RX-8 was powered by a Wankel engine, so there can be no 4-cyl talk here. People sometimes call the combustion chamber in Wankel engines "cylinder", but this is not accurate. Besides, even if this path would've been used, the RX-8 should've been listed as a "two-cylinder", since it features two rotors.

While there are certainly a number of RX-8s out there that have received an engine swap, we can be pretty sure this isn’t one of them, so we’ll rule out this possibility too.

The owner clearly has no idea what he’s talking about, since he also tries to convince us the car has “good gas miles”. Craigslist grammar aside, let’s just say the rotary engine isn’t exactly famous for its efficiency. For instance, it was its emissions that determined Mazda to put the RX-8 out of production. Sure, this is the manual model, so it still gets better mpg figures than automatic RX-8s, but the conclusion still stands.

In fact, this guy is not so much of an RX-8 owner, more of a seller, which also explains the low mileage.
