We’re used to having scientists constantly repeating we’re supposed to be careful for the signs on the street, not to text while driving, avoid selfies whenever we’re hitting the road and so on. But researchers have found the world is facing yet a bigger problem, if there’s distracted driving, there’s also distracted walking.
The cellphone lane above was recently developed in Chonqing, China and it's living proof the 21st century is all about weird ideas that will not seize to surprise us.

What, you just had a "What the F" moment? Well, too bad for you, considering the idea of mobile phone sidewalks is not even something new. Washington, D.C. unveiled one earlier this summer, only it was a stunt put together by the National Geographic. This time, we’re looking at a mobile phone-only sidewalk along a portion of Yangren Street from on of the five major cities in China called Chongqing.

As opposed to National Geographic’s experiment, according to Shanghaiist, the special lane designed for smartphone users was actually intended to cut down on accidents. Smartphone addicts have been blamed for everything from inconveniencing others with their slow pace to causing accidents.

And just when you think this whole discussion is just a big joke meant to get on drivers’ nerves, statistics show of.

According to recent survey made by Liberty Mutual Insurance, 2013, as many as 60% of pedestrians use mobile phones while crossing the street. These increasingly common behaviors are being linked to increased risk of pedestrian incidents and injuries. In the U.S., accidents involving phone distracted pedestrians are estimated to have increased three-fold from 2004 to 2010 (Nasar & Troyer, 2013).

Well, the only thing left to say is this: if you guys really intend to turn smartphone lanes into a normal thing worldwide, maybe it was time to build special lanes designed for beautiful ladies, as well.
