Shell Will Have Its Own BMW M4 DTM Car this Season

BMW will be entering the 2015 DTM Championship with a brand new car in the line-up, wearing the colors of Shell, the company with which they just signed a new deal. The USCC cars will also be wearing Shell sponsored messages in the USA races.

Starting with 2015, Shell is replacing Castrol and the sole recommended supplier of oils for BMW engines, ending a long-lasting collaboration between the two brands. Of course, race cars will also use oil from the same company, but with different properties, to cater to the needs of stressful racing situations.

As a result, the Shell Helix Ultra logo will appear on all eight DTM race cars, but only one will be completely dedicated to this sponsor. The rest of the line-up will remain the same, excepting the Castrol EDGE model driven by Augusto Farfus (the green one).

“Shell Helix Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum are high-performance brands, which are perfectly suited to our motorsport projects. We are putting our faith in these high-performance lubricants, and hope that the new partnership will allow us to lay the foundation for great success together on the racetrack,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director.

Of course, he also claims that everyone is excited about working with Shell but we’ll have to give it some time to see if it all checks out.

What’s the advantage of Shell’s products?

As it turns out, Shell lubricants employ a new technology that uses revolutionary gas-to-liquid process to get the end product. Due to the new technology natural gas is converted into a crystal-clear base oil that has none of the impurities of crude oils.

For road-going cars, the differences might not be as high as Shell wants us to believe. However, in motorsport, every small difference matters and in this case, it could be the difference between winning or losing, especially in endurance races.

That’s also why BMW Team RLL will be using Shell oils in the USCC starting this year, as they use their Z4 GTLM cars in endurance events most of the time, no matter if it’s a 6-hour stint or a 24-hour one.
