Houston, Texas, will be the place where this week a new fuel efficiency competition will take place. To kick off as the Shell Eco Marathon Americas on April 14, the competition is open for all those who feel they might have a say in the green future that is shaping up at the horizon.
The competition is not meant for the cars that you would normally see on the roads at any given time. As an organizer, Shell will allow each and any of the participants to decide on the design, technologies and tactics they will employ in order to achieve the biggest mileage with the lowest fuel consumption.
The vehicles that will race in the competition can be entered in one of two categories, Prototype and Urban Concept. Starting with the 2011 edition of the competition, battery electric vehicles will be allowed to participate as well as part of the Prototype category.
To be eligible for an entry on the starting grid, the vehicles must be powered by one of the following types of fuel: Shell Regular 87, Shell Diesel, Shell Gas To Liquid, Fatty Acid Methyl Ester and Ethanol E100.
This year, together with The New York Times, it will host the 2011 Energy Summit: Innovative Solutions for an Evolving Energy Future, a two-day symposium that will bring together representatives from the energy, policy, environment, business and academia sectors.
The Shell Eco Marathon Americas will see a total of 70 teams taking part in the competition, with 62 Prototype entries and 15 UrbanConcept entries. They can all be seen at the following link.
