Shelby American has announced the introduction of the 50th Anniversary FIA Cobra, a limited edition continuation vehicle that celebrates the birth of the 289 Ford-powered Cobra.
Launched in 1964 to take on Corvettes, Jaguars and Aston Martins in the World Manufacturers Championship series, the small block Shelby Cobra returns today as a limited edition lightweight car that will be built in only 50 units.
Introduced at Barrett-Jackson’s auction event in Scottsdale, Arizona, the 289 FIA Cobra will be offered in Shelby’s world famous Viking Blue paint and will feature FIA stripes and rounders, special billet anniversary badges and Cobra racing wheels before options.
Shelby is offering the new FIA Cobra with either a fiberglass or an aluminum body, with prices beginning at $94,995 for the former and $159,995 for the latter, excluding drive train.
“The 289 FIA Shelby Cobras were among the most important cars in American racing history,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “The FIA Cobras built during that period were piloted by racing legends including Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and Bob Bondurant. Thus, some of the most revered drivers in the sport put the 289 FIA Cobra into the winner’s circle. Combining a robust, powerful American engine with a lightweight chassis was sheer brilliance. Shelby’s formula still resonates today and is followed by automakers worldwide.”
