Shareholders Urge Mercedes-Benz to Leave Formula One

The largest group of private shareholders in Mercedes-Benz are asking the company to leave Formula One if FIA decides to punish the team over the so called “tire-gate” testing controversy.

"Mercedes-Benz must get out of F1. The company spends hundred of millions here, and it doesn't bring anyone anything,” Michael Muders, manager at Union Investment, told Autocar.

The scandal emerged as Mercedes-Benz used its current Formula One car to conduct a Pirelli tire test right after the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. While tire testing with current cars is not allowed by FIA, the German-backed team claims the session was approved by the Federation.

The Barcelona test will go into the FIA Tribunal hearing later this week. Word has it Pirelli could decide to withdraw from Formula One with the FIA rules against future testing.
