In what is a premiere for China, German carmaker Mercedes Benz signed a naming rights agreement for the arena under construction in Shanghai, jointly developed by Oriental Pearl Group, AEG and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The arena will become the single Mercedes-Benz named-venue outside Germany and will be ready to host world-class events including performing arts, sports and family entertainment in 2011.

"The new Mercedes-Benz Arena will reinforce Shanghai as culturally-rich city on the world map and create a new destination of arts and lifestyle on the international stage. This reconfirms Mercedes-Benz's continued commitment to arts and cultural development in the Chinese market," Klaus Maier, Mercedes Benz China CEO said in a release.

"Mercedes-Benz is an automobile manufacturer with great vision and a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. We are delighted to work together with Mercedes-Benz and two world leaders in the entertainment and sports industry -- AEG and the NBA -- to build the new landmark of culture and lifestyle in the dynamic and influential city of Shanghai," Niu Weiping, Oriental Pearl president added.

The arena, designed by Xian Dai Architectural Design Group, has 18,000 seats and is poised to become the most technologically-advanced venue in the region. It will include 82 luxury suites, VIP Clubs, food and beverage options, and the best acoustics, stage-systems and lighting.

"This world-class arena will be not only the pride of Shanghai, but also the pride of China and our joint efforts will create a new benchmark in long-term cooperation and venue management in China," Weiping concluded
