All the carbon fibre BMW uses for its cars (including but not limited to the i3 and i8) is made in the US at the Moses Lake facility in a joint venture with American company SGL Carbon.
However, according to German newspaper, Handelsblatt, quoting sources inside the Bavarian company, the two will soon renown their partnership and double the production, due to high demand, to 6,000 tones a year.
Furthermore, the BMW Group is also planning further investments in the CFRP manufacturing facilities worth €100 million over the next years in order to increase production.
If these reports are true, it means BMW will surely use the lightweight material in more of its upcoming models amongst which we might find the new X1, X4, 7 Series and various M cars. Add the already impressive orders for the i3 and things start to make a lot more sense.
