Several Special 2018 Lamborghini Urus SUV Models Under Consideration

In case you thought that Lamborghini’s second-ever SUV model, the 2018 Urus, wasn’t special enough, you’ll be glad to learn that the Italians are pondering giving us a couple more variations based on the car.

Lamborghini head honcho, Stephan Winkelmann just talked to Autocar a couple of days ago and had some rather interesting things to say about the upcoming Urus.

“We have more than enough ideas, but it is too early to confirm anything,” said Winkelmann. “All options are possible and we will work on evaluating them in the run-up to launch. If our customers want to see something, we’ll do our best to meet their needs.”

If we’re to believe the Brits, that seems to point into only one direction: a SuperVeloce model. However, we’re reluctant to say that’s the only thing implied here.

Sure, if you look over Lamborghini’s history, you’ll notice that usually when they offer a special model, it’s a SuperVeloce. It was the case with so many cars, the last two being the Murcielago and Aventador SV versions.

However, they are also known for their Superleggera versions for example. As a matter of fact, the Gallardo is quite known in the auto world for the abundance of special versions it received. Therefore, we think that the Urus could get a lot more than just a SuperVeloce version.

The question that troubles us is not that, though, but what powerplant they will be using. At first, you’d be quick to say that the same V12 from the Aventador would be a choice but you’d be wrong.

Officials said countless times that they plan to offer the lowest level of CO2 emissions in its segment and that hints at a hybrid powertrain that uses a turbocharged mill instead of an atmospheric one.

That being said, our guess is that the engine could be a reinterpretation of the 4-liter twin-turbo V8 Audi uses on its S8 flagship, making around 500 HP. That would be hooked up to an electric motor for a combined output of around 600 HP, a figure that was offered by officials in various interviews.

Couple that to an all-wheel drive system and you get a car that would definitely take the fight to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, BMW X6 M and Range Rover SVR.

Production of the car won’t be done on the same assembly lines as the new Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, as it was expected. Instead, Lamborghini was convinced by the Italian government to built its Urus locally and it will be doubling the capacity of its Sant’Agata Bolognese plant in the process, hiring 500 new employees.
