Seven-Seat Rivian R1S Launch Edition Costs Just $2,500 More Than R1T Sibling

Rivian just revealed a massive update to its corporate website, announcing a lot of novelties for its R1T pickup truck and R1S seven-seat sport utility vehicle, including pricing, colors, the date when the configurator goes live, equipment packages, and more. Most importantly, we know exactly when the two models will be released.

Because we already discussed all the details pertaining to the fully electric R1T pickup truck (which had priority because it’s the first to reach the market, in June 2021), now it’s time to refocus on the R1S.

While many of the specifications for the R1T apply here as well, such as the available colors, preorder downpayment ($1,000), and official start of configurations (November 16th for reservation holders, 23rd for the rest of the world), the SUV is getting a few changes on its own.

First and foremost, it’s going to be available as the seven-seat R1S Launch Edition a little later next year – first deliveries are scheduled for August 2021. The same three options will initially apply – R1S launch Edition, Adventure, and Explore. But pricing is a little bit different.

As such, the R1S Launch Edition starts from $77,500, the R1S Adventure (available from January 2022) kicks off at the same level, while the most affordable will be the R1S Explore at $70k (January 2022). It’s important to note the R1S is exactly $2,500 more expensive than its R1T sibling.

Also, the same Launch Edition caveat applies for the R1S as well – Rivian announced “supply will be limited,” so its additional perks will be had on a first come, first served, basis – or “original preorder date, delivery location and configuration,” in official speak.

Just like with the pickup, the R1S Launch Edition comes with additional freebies compared to the similarly priced Adventure model on which it’s based: standard seven-seat configuration, special badges, an exclusive Launch Green paint, along with a 20-inch All-Terrain or 22-inch Sport wheel upgrade.

All three models share the same 300+ mile (483 km) Large battery pack, which is the middle option announced by Rivian. While the 400+ mile (644 km) pack for the R1T will become available from January 2022, the R1S with an unannounced longer range will become official after the start of production, along with the cheapest R1T / R1S models that will feature the 250+ mile (402 km) batteries.
