Brazilian driver Bruno Senna reiterated his desire to debut in Formula One and revealed he is ready to wait until 2010 to secure a driving seat. When asked by British magazine AUTOSPORT if he would accept taking on a vacant spot during the 2009 championship, the nephew of 3-time world champion Ayrton Senna admitted he would have second thoughts.
It's no news that there are a few drivers in danger of losing their driving spots with their teams until the season finale at Abu Dhabi. Although the teams are keeping a low profile about it, Renault's Nelson Piquet and Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais seem the most likely candidates. The former is yet to score a point for his team this season, while the latter is constantly being outpaced by rookie teammate Sebastien Buemi.
However, when being suggested to take the opportunity of a vacant seat in 2009, Senna said he would prefer to wait until next year. The reason is quite understandable, considering the former GP2 runner-up is yet to drive a 2009-spec F1 car, and in-season tests are no longer possible due to FIA's new rule book.
Under the circumstances, coming on a Friday morning and getting into a totally unknown territory with a 2009 car would seem nonsense for Senna. With 4 more racing spots up for grabs for the 2010 season – thanks to FIA's policy of accepting 2 more entries for the upcoming year – Senna said he'd rather wait for his turn.
“It would have to be a really good opportunity because F1 is extremely competitive and there is no testing. So it is a question of analyzing the risk. If the team had a great simulator then maybe, but if getting in the car on a Friday was my first experience then I think it's a bad idea,” Senna was quoted by AUTOSPORT.
