Senna Documentary Makes Ron Dennis Cry

Ron Dennis admitted that he couldn't help crying after watching the much-acclaimed new feature documentary about Ayrton Senna's life.

Asif Kapadia's documentary “Senna”, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, focuses on the life of the triple world champion and uses exclusively archive footage. The film has gathered extremely positive reviews since launch.

Being that he was the man to preside over Senna's 3 world titles during his McLaren days, Dennis admitted that watching the film proved an emotional experience for him.

Yes, at certain points I cried,” admitted the former McLaren boss in a recent interview with Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport. “Some of the images touched me deeply. We had a very close relationship, not only fighting about contracts.”

Needless to say, it was also under Dennis' tenure at McLaren that Senna and Alain Prost developed maybe the most intense rivalries in the history of Formula 1. 1988 remains a season for the books, as the duo scored 15 wins in 16 races and the title eventually went to the Brazilian driver. Asked if he could change something from that period, Dennis did not hesitate.

If you try to win with only one driver, then the ability of the team to win suffers,” he said. “What's clear is that despite the dispute, we won 15 of the 16 races in 1988.

Additionally, he admitted that no one could guess what Senna's F1 tally would have been had he not died in that accident at Imola, back in 1994.

You could only answer that with a crystal ball,” he answered when asked whether Senna's titles would have surpassed Michael Schumacher's. “When he went to Williams, the team was in trouble but he would have used his experience and won at least a fourth championship.
