Senna Documentary Impresses the Critics at Sundance

The documentary about the life of triple world champion Ayrton Senna has finally debuted, but only few have had the chance to actually get a glimpse of it. The movie was seen for the first time at Sundance Film Festival and if we are to judge by the first reviews, it will have a huge success in case it will be released worldwide.

According to the LA Times, Screenwriter and Executive Producer Manish Pandey told the crowd present at Sundance that he initially revealed his work to former Ayrton Senna manager at McLaren, Ron Dennis. And although the Brit is known to be quite the tough man inside the F1 paddock – or at least he was, as he has now retired – Pandey revealed he cried for minutes.

After the film ended, Ron Dennis cried for 10 minutes,” Pandey said, according to the aforementioned source. “Then he sat and talked about Senna for two hours.”

What's so unique about this particular film is the fact that director Asif Kapadia used footage from Formula 1's archive to reveal not only the on-track battles Senna most commonly had with long-time rival Alain Prost, but also his personality outside the track. In all, the film uses more than 15,000 hours of archival footage, compressed in 104 minutes of untold drama.

While many have only heard about Ayrton Senna or have simply associated his image with a few world titles and some 33 Grand Prix wins, this movie will definitely take you on a more thorough journey into the life of a true hero. He died at 34, during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, and we have all missed him ever since.

You can watch a trailer for the film after the jump.
