Hyundai has always been keen on being the talk of the town every time the doors of the SEMA Show open. Whether it's a zombie apocalypse survival machine, a superhero-livered SUV or a killer engine swap, they seem to always have what it takes to wow the crowds and are genuinely interested in their input. For 2014, one of their star projects is based on the all-new Sonata sedan and packs an all-mighty punch.
Stuffed under the bonnet of your average mid-size family car is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that's been tuned by Bisimoto Engineering to run in a flex-fuel setup and produce 708 horsepower. Why exactly 708? Hyundai won't say, but if this were a production car, it would take the title of "World's Most Powerful Sedan" away from the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, which produces a measly 707 horsepower.
“With a proven and efficient 2.4-liter engine as a starting platform and a sophisticated, sleek, four-door design, the 2015 Sonata was the perfect candidate for this year’s build,” said Bisi Ezerioha, owner and chief engineer, Bisimoto Engineering.
How do you get a Sonata to go from under 200 hp to being more powerful than any production car with four doors? You do a complete overhaul, add a massive turbo, some beefy intercoolers and change pretty much every component that ever comes in contact with fuel, from the injectors to the block sleeves.
“Outrageous power is nothing without reliability, and it was a firm goal to retain the reliability that Hyundai is known for. After hundreds of hours of testing, failure analysis and prototyping, 18 new products will be engineered and produced in house to produce 708 horsepower from the Sonata," added Ezerioha.
Of course, there's no such thing as a sleeper at SEMA, so the bodywork and chassis are going to be made, taking the Sonata from mild-mannered Clark Kent to a supercar killer. The vehicle will be fully revealed at t Hyundai’s SEMA press conference on November 4.
