"Selfish" Alonso Could Win Title - Berger

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel may be driving the best car in Formula One at the moment, but the best driver in the series is Fernando Alonso. At least that's what former Grand Prix driver Gerhard Berger said in a recent interview, when asked to share his thoughts on the title fight and how things will go down in the last 3 rounds of the season.

Additionally, Berger also gave those Red Bull drivers a piece of advice: this year's title will only be won if one is as “selfish” as Alonso. Meaning that the whole thinking about what's good for the team approach will not play in either Webber's or Vettel's favor in the remaining rounds of the season.

Only if they're as selfish as Alonso will they be world champion this year. For me he's the best driver at the moment overall; he has experience and is still young enough to be going flat out without fear,” said Berger in a recent interview with German newspaper Sport Bild.

The former Ferrari-an also backs the Scuderia's philosophy of supporting a single driver for the title fight, and agrees that there was no better driver to fall into that equation rather than the 2-time world champion.

Ferrari cannot do better than Alonso, and there is no better place for Alonso than Ferrari,” added Berger, who used to co-own Scuderia Toro Rossi with the current owner of Red Bull Racing, Dietrich Mateschitz.

However, Berger made it very clear that if Alonso will win this year's title it will only be because of his strength as a driver and the full support of his team (teammate Felipe Massa included) and not because of his car. As far as Berger is concerned, in 2010 Red Bull's Adrian Newey-designed RB6 is in a “class of one”.
