Segway Inventor Hosts TV Show

Dean Kamen, the man responsible for more than one useful inventions but known to the world as the brain behind the Segway, is getting ready to tackle a new challenge, this time on the screen.

Planet Green, one of the gazillion channels owned by Discovery Channel, aired last Friday the first of a series of eight episodes of a show called Dean of Invention. The series, hosted by Dean Kamen, takes a deeper look into the inventions and innovations which have, or soon will, change the world as we know it.

"I'm not an actor, I can't just read lines and I have a day job," Kamen was quoted as saying by mainichi.jp. "But I'm always willing -- in fact, I'm shamelessly groveling and begging -- to find support for FIRST. I've got to get the word out!"

The first episode of the series, called Meet The Microbots, tried to answer some questions about the technology usually referred to as nanobots. The following episodes will take a closer look at bionic body parts, waste to energy conversion and, of more interest to us, the future of transportation.

"If kids could become passionate about their capability to use tools of science and technology to make a better world, and to realize that's more accessible to them as a career than, say, pro sports, they'd be all over it," Kamen added.

Kamen founded the company which would end up producing the Segway in 1999, with the public introduction of the device taking place two years later.
