With the 2021 Ford F-150 renewed for an entirely new generation, everyone expects the Blue Oval to easily take its best-selling truck series to further record heights. The company has also introduced a complete novelty – the PowerBoost hybrid version. Now, the Fast Lane Truck guys have decided to bring the latter to actual heights – pitting the new variant against their signature Ike Gauntlet – a.k.a. “The World’s Toughest Towing Test.”
The black 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Limited has been with them for a while already – giving them enough time to get to know the high-specced truck in minute detail. In the meantime, they subjected it to all kinds of tests and trials, including a very interesting towing mpg challenge against a smaller and diesel-equipped Jeep Gladiator.

For the latest essay, the F-150 Hybrid is almost maxed out (at 15.480 lbs/7,022 kg) with a 9,240 lbs (4,191 kg) trailer, which doesn’t actually make it squat a lot, coming down to around 38 inches (96.5 cm) from 40 inches (102 cm) unladen.

With everything set up, it’s time to meet Mr. Truck from the 2:50 mark and greet the competition. On this occasion, they brought a class rival – the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss. It’s a lot closer than last time, although they’re still comparing a flagship Limited trim against the off-road oriented Trail Boss.

Just to make sure they’re (almost) on par with the powertrain credentials, the Silverado 1500 runs the 5.3-liter V8, which brings 355 hp and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) to the comparison chart (check out its presentation from the 4:55 mark). The F-150 Hybrid still has the upper hand, with its 3.5-liter V6 PowerBoost capable of delivering 430 hp and 570 lb-ft (773 Nm) of torque – the details on it come at the 7:55 mark.

As far as the Ike Gauntlet action is concerned, “The World's Toughest Towing Test” kicks off with the Chevrolet Silverado first – going first downhill (4:25) and then uphill (5:34) to set the benchmark. Its final results include a fuel economy of 3.4 mpg (69.1 liters per 100 km) and an uphill time of 8:05:33.

The F-150 starts its double journey from the 7:05 mark, and the downhill test brings a total of eight brake applications against just six for the Silverado. On the other hand, the rest of the findings swing the balance in its favor during the specific chapters (8:30 comparison of details, 11:35 uphill portion).

As such, the new hybrid truck is quieter (62 to around 68 dB), faster on the uphill (7:49:41) and just a tad more fuel efficient, with a 3.5 mpg (67.2 liters per 100 km) return.
