The future generation XC90 carries the weight of the world on its shoulders by being Volvo's first all-new model from head to toe in eons and the Swedish brand's all-new design language template. Volvo already unveiled all three concepts showcasing the design cues of the future SUV, while pre-production mules just ended rough winter testing in Sweden, so it's just a matter of time until the second generation Volvo XC90 hits the showroom floors.
Codenamed V526, the production version of Volvo's seven-seat SUV should be officially revealed to the public before the end of the year, most probably at the Paris Auto Show in October, right after the end of summer testing season. The XC90 will debut Volvo's all-new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), which will also be the foundation of all future 40 and 60-series Volvo models. This new platform pushes the front wheels forwards and the A-pillars backwards in order to get a long GT-like bonnet design.

However, you won't see any gas-guzzling six or eight-cylinder power plants under the hood because Volvo is adamant with his future range of four-pot petrol and diesel VEA engines. These are specially designed for the SPA platform and will feature turbocharging for that extra oomph low in the rev range, while more performance-oriented models will get a turbo-supercharger combo for relentless torque throughout the rev range.

The top engine option will be a 300 horsepower turbocharged and supercharged petrol unit, while the more economical diesels will get an advanced i-ART injection system for added miles per gallon and less CO2 emissions. The XC90 will also come with a choice of hybrid powertrains that will make use of an electric motor powering the rear wheels, with the batteries nicely tucked in the center transmission tunnel and under the rear floor.

First previewed by the Volvo Concept Estate, the automaker's new dashboard design is dominated by a 9.5-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system. This brand-new system allows the driver to control all of the car's functions and will also integrate Apple's CarPlay system. The rest of the fascia includes only seven conventional switches and knobs.

Volvo's second generation XC90 will measure 4.9 meters in length, making it 100 mm longer than the outgoing model. Along with the slightly wider track, the new model will offer a tad more interior space for passengers and their luggage.

The new Volvo XC90 is expected to go on sale early next year, with prices starting from around €48.000 ($66.350).
