SEAT Tweaks Engine Range

The automotive industry is on a constant pursuit of efficiency, with some of the most pathways used to achieve this being downsizing and engine fine tuning. This is exactly what SEAT is doing, as the company is introducing new engines for its best-selling models.

The Ibiza range, which includes the SC (three door), five-door and ST (estate) models, can now be ordered with a 1.2 liter turbocharged TSI unit that delivers 105 hp. The unit, which replaces the 1.6 liter naturally aspirated 105 hp, can be matted to a five-speed manual gearbox or to a seven-speed DSG double clutch gearbox.

The new unit offers superior performance comapared to the one it replaces, cutting half a second off the vehicle’s 0 to 62 mph acceleration time, which now stands at 9.8 seconds.

And proving that you can have your cake and eat it, the new turbocharged 1.2 also makes the Ibiza both more economical and more environmentally responsible.  Versus the 1.6 combined economy is improved by a massive 25%, from 44.8 UK mpg [6.3l/100 km/h] to 55.4 UK mpg[5.1l/100 km] (SC and 5dr) while CO2 emissions are slashed by 20% from 149 g/km to just 119 g/km,” stated the press release.

At the same time, the Leon and Altea ranges have replaced the 2.0 TDI 140 hp diesel engine that uses a pump injector system with a unit that uses a common rail fueling system. This unit is also avaialble with a DSG transmission.

Like the TSI the 2.0 TDI CR is offered with a manual or DSG ‘box but, regardless of transmission, offers nimble acceleration and a smooth, efficient drive.  In the Leon, the new common rail turbodiesel sees CO2 drop from 147 g/km to just 125 g/km, while combined economy climbs from 50.4 UK mpg (5.6l/100km) to 58.9 UK mpg [4.8l/100km], a welcome 15% improvement,” stated the press release.
