We've already shown you the new SEAT Leon undergoing testing and even leaked a full trunk lid. But the Spanish automaker is so proud of its new compact that it wants to preview it with a concept first.
Concept cars for regular family cars are quite rare. However, Skoda also recently previewed the Scala, which replaces the Rapid, with a Vision hatch. In any case, Autocar reports that the Leon's design will be previewed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, which is about four months from now.
But that's not all; the UK publication also did a full interview with SEAT's head of design Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, and what he said is... well, check this out:
“We are going to be steering away from edges and lines. Using hard lines to express precision is something we have been doing since the Leon was launched in 2012. But we need to be more different to our colleagues in the Volkswagen Group. There will be far fewer structured lines, the sort of lines that simply travel from A to B. There will be bolder sculpture, fullness with some tension. The sort of surfaces you have to touch to understand them completely. Something sensual.”
You heard that right. The Leon will be sensual, and you'll want to touch it to understand its shape. Sound a little dirty, but the hatchback segment needs provocation.
We've already got a pretty good idea of what to expect thanks to the spyshots. But despite what Mesonero-Romanos, the Leon is still very much connected to the way VV&Co do things. For example, the trunk lid is sloped and has a short deck over the top, a bit like the Astra G. But so does the next Audi A3. A long nose is also present, but we see that on the Octavia 4 prototype too.
But that's not to say this isn't an exciting car, especially when next-gen infotainment systems and new engines are coming. The Leon is almost guaranteed to have a 200+ horsepower version, and the Cupra won't be far behind.
