Harley-Davidson announces the availability of yet another crate engine: the Screamin’ Eagle 120, one of the ultimate factory-produced high-performance upgrades a MoCo enthusiast can claw to make his bike meaner. European riders should know they are looking at a 1,966 cc air-cooled power plant, which can produce a 106 hp peak power (at the rear wheel) complemented by a neat 117 lb-ft (158 Nm) torque figure.
Sure, these figures are rather funny when comparing this engine with the heart of a Triumph Rocket III which can deliver 148 bhp (150 hp) and 221 Nm (12.9 lb-ft), but we’re not comparing apples to oranges here.

This engine is a bolt-in installation in a H-D Touring chassis and does not require fabrication or engine mount relocation. Of course, bike builders who are producing a Harley-powered custom project will have to either replicate the Touring frame or design one to accommodate this power unit. The engine is already equipped with a Screamin’ Eagle 58, throttle body, a piece which is 18% larger than stock, also contributing to reaching the full capacity of the engine.

Wrinkle black and chrome, the classic custom recipe

Harley-Davidson designers went for a meaner and more elegant livery for this engine, replacing the usual, retro-classic all-chrome finish with a combination of wrinkle black and chromed details, complemented by machined aluminium details. If anything, this could go in almost any build, regardless of color choice.

According to Harley, the Screamin’ Eagle SE120ST Performance Crate Engine will not fit Twin-Cooled models and is street-legal when used with OEM mufflers or a Screamin’ Eagle Street Performance Exhaust System. The manufacturer’s recommendation also includes using this engine in conjunction with the Screamin’ Eagle 58mm High-Flow Air and a Screamin’ Eagle High Flow Exhaust System, available separately.

Here’s some more tech talk for the gearheads:
  • 4.060 big-bore cylinders
  • 4 5/8-inch (117 mm) stroke SE Pro stroker flywheel and rod assembly
  • 10.5:1 high-compression nickel-plated forged pistons with Teflon coated skirt
  • Titanium SST piston rings
  • SE-259E high-lift cams
  • Perfect Fit push rods
  • SE high-performance lifters
  • CNC-ported MVA heads with automatic compression release
  • SE Pro High-Flow 58mm EFI Throttle Body, high flow injectors and manifold clamps
  • Machined lower rocker boxes for valve spring collar clearance
  • Factory-machined engine cases
  • Unique piston oilers for stroker clearance
  • SE inner crankcase full complement cam needle bearings
  • SE Lefty high-performance crankcase output bearing and nitride bearing race
  • SE Performance spark plugs
  • 120ST cam cover and cylinder head medallions.

Stateside, the Screamin’ Eagle SE120ST Performance Crate Engine is available for $5,695, but across the pond we spotted it in the UK with a heftier £5,582, which is €7,670 and uncomfortably close to the price of a 2015 Super Low or 883 Roadster.
