Despite the fact that Scotland’s roads are officially the safest they’ve ever been since the recording of fatalities began, the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents (ASPS) wants to take safety even further. Their goal is to get all new cars to come with cruise control and a speed limiter fitted as standard, to make it easier for drivers to stick to the speed limit.
An article from The Scotsman points to the fact that ASPS have formally asked the Parliament of Scotland to push forth their plan. However, this means that they would have to alter European Union legislation, and that is considerably more difficult than changing one of Scotland’s ‘internal’ laws, if not impossible. According to Chief Superintendent David O’Connor, "For people like salesmen, if all cars had cruise control, it would be easier to drive within limits." Sadly, we fail to understand what salesmen have to do with the changing of the law, but we’ll grant this one.
Another proposition brought forth by the same group is the idea of fitting a black box which records the driver’s every action - to be used for drivers under the age of 25 to keep track of their driving style. We’ll let you know if this progresses any further.
