The hot hatch that Peugeot almost didn't make is going to debut at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed. But we won't have to wait that long for some of the really juicy details because the specs have come out.
As everybody expected, the 308 GTI is powered by a 1.6-liter turbo engine, just like the RCZ R. However, there are two outputs available, just like with the Renault Megane RS, SEAT Leon Cupra and Golf GTI.
According to this brochure, discovered by Autoblog.nl, the base GTi will pack 250 PS and will be followed by a 270 PS performance version. Both turbos offer the same 330 Nm (244 lb-ft) of torque, which is decent, but below what the bigger 2-liter hot hatches pack.
It's unlikely that the 308 GTi will grab headlines in the same way as the Honda Civic Type R or Ford Focus RS. But the customers should be happy with the way it handles. That's because this car is extremely light.
At 1,205 kilograms (2,656 lbs), the 308 GTi is impressive for a 5-door car of this size. It's worth knowing that this is the weight of a totally empty car, but it's still very impressive. In fact, when you consider that the Renault Megane RS tips the scales at 1354 kilograms (2985 lbs), you begin to understand how Peugeot could win drag races.
The proportions of the French car are nearly identical to those of the average 308. It's 4256 mm long (167.5 inches), 1863 mm (73.3 inches) wide and 1446 mm tall (56.9 inches), with a 2620 mm (103.1 inches) wheelbase. That means it's a bit shorter than some of its competitors, but that won't create practicality problems.
