We think it's a good idea for Bugatti to retire the Veyron right now, while it still has some glory to its name. A thousand horsepower might have seemed like a lot back in its day, but McLaren has announced it's working on a four-digit car all its own, and it's based on the jaw-dropping P1 hybrid.
The announcement was made today as a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR's victory at the 24 Hours of LE Mans race.
The P1 GTR, as it's called, will only come out once production of the regular P1 runs out. Mind you, making all 375 examples should last well into 2015, so we'll have to wait a while before it's ready.
Besides boosting the output of the 3.8-liter twin-turbo hybrid system to 1,000 PS, the Brits will also fit the GTR with slick race tires, a wider track and aggressively tuned suspension. The aerodynamics will also be changed by the arrival of a bigger rear wing and roof-mounted scoop, all added with the intent of shaving milliseconds and impressing supercar-loving kids.
McLaren says that the P1 GTR will cost £1.98 million ($3.3 billion or €2.5 million), which includes not only the car but also a "tailored programme created for each customer to build driver capability. It will include exclusive consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and Design Director Frank Stephenson, privileged access to one of the McLaren racing simulators, and participation in a minimum of six dedicated international drive events to be held at some of the world’s most iconic Formula 1 circuits."
It will be quite interesting to see a hot battle between McLaren's finest and an XX version of the LaFerrari.
