The Scirocco continues to be a relevant racing car, despite being almost a decade old. However, accidents are bound to happen, especially during the last VLN race of the year taking place at the famous Nurburgring track.
The weather is pretty cold and miserable, so this weekend saw more crashes than ever. We'll start things off by looking at one that didn't happen.

Coming out of a long high-speed corner, the blue coupe loses traction on one side and "flips ends." Even though it looks like it's going to hit the inside edge, that would actually be pretty hard to do.

Instead, the real danger is the barrier on the side we don't see. But one all four wheels are on dry tarmac, the driver slams the brakes and manages to stop.

The only problem for him is that the Scirocco is now facing the wrong way around. For a road car, turning would be easy, but the racing steering rack is very short, so a 3-point turn is required. It looks pretty dangerous due to the Nurburgring traffic racing past, but he manages to pull it off and re-enters the race having lost only a couple of positions.

The Golf-based coupe isn't for sale anymore, and the Scirocco R has been out of production for a good while now. But we think this racing version looks totally badass. It's got a naturally wide and low stance, beefed up with extra aero like a big rear diffuser and trunk wing. Slick tires are kept in contact with the most complex track in the world using typical H&R coilover suspension.

Most Scirocco race cars made since 2008 have a 300 horsepower version of the 2.0 TFSI, usually matched to a DSG gearbox. It's a combo that's even been used in 24H races. However, there's also a natural gas version which Gazprom fields that only delivers 235 HP.
