In fact, the Scion FR-S (also known as Toyota GT 86) and its Subaru BRZ cousin scored for IIHS’ 2014 Top Safety Pick with an Acceptable overall score. It could have been a Top Safety Pick+ result but the coupe lacks an available frontal crash prevention system.

The structure safety during the impact was rated Marginal, due to a maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 31 cm (12.2 in) at the lower hinge pillar. Upper interior intrusion measured as much as 18 cm (7 in) at the instrument panel and hinge pillar, while the door sill was pushed in laterally 20 cm (7.8 in) towards the driver.

Head, neck, chest and hip protection received a Good rating, with only the lower leg receiving the Acceptable mark.

All other previous Scion FR-S crash tests results were rated Good. Apart from the frontal airbags, the coupe comes fitted as standard with front and rear head curtain airbags as well as front seat-mounted torso ones.

Active safety is assured by Toyota’s STAR Safety System that includes vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist and Smart Stop Technology.
