Your long awaited open-top Scion FR-S/Toyota GT 86 now has a chance to come real as a targa model. There’s one at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association Show (SEMA) to prove the concept seems feasible.
Not even a year had passed since the GT 86/FR-S’ reveal when people started asking for a roofless version. Who wouldn’t care about an affordable, good looking, fun to drive, reliable sportscar than can also open up its top and boost the driving enjoyment?

Toyota seemed to catch up on the idea and even teased the fans with two convertible concepts, really giving us hope, but the company ended up saying such a modification to the car would turn to be a fiasco, since the car was never intended to go as an open top model and the added strengthening bodywork would make it feel less sporty.

Targa FR-S to the rescue

Yeah, but no one thought there’s still a solution to all of these - a targa roof version. Which just made its debut at the SEMA show this year wearing a Scion badge.

The Targa Top FR-S, or the FR-S T1, was built by Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs, the same guy who created the limited edition Scion tC Release Series 9.0 we saw yesterday.

As with the yellow from earlier, the FR-S T1 comes in a two-tone finish, glossy black for the top and Azzuro California Blue for the rest of the bodywork. To increase the car’s appeal, an all-metal wide body kit with integrated rear spoiler has been applied along with a set of 19-inch forged alloy wheels.

Mechanically, the targa FR-S comes with a GReddy street turbo kit, a high-mounted custom center exhaust, a KW coil-over suspension system as well as a Willwood Big Brake Kit with a custom nickel-plated finish.

Event though the targa version doesn’t come as an official concept, we do hope Toyota will notice the advantages and offer such a version along with the next generation. The Supra had a targa top, why would the GT 86/FR-S miss one?

Retro is strong with the xB

OK, so you thought the Scion xB looks like a brick on wheels won’t give you any emotion ever. But have you thought about profiting on its shapes and turn it into a retro-looking ride?

‘Cause if not, here’s how it might look like. Yep and AMC Gremlin, but with two extra doors, more luxury and Japanese reliability. Exactly what the old model was lacking to become a hit.

This Scion x Riley Hawk Skate Tour xB you see here has been built by Scott Kanemura of KMA Productions, being inspired by the interests of professional skateboarder Riley Hawk and the 1970s style and passion for music.

The exterior is garnished by a 70s style livery with a “fish bowl” side window, dual side exhaust pipes (which unfortunately are not functional) as well as a set retro rims wrapped in BfGoodrich tires.

Inside, you get plush captain-style seats both front and back, a motorized rear-facing monitor for media playback, dual-motion tables for the rear passengers, a sick sound system, shaggy upholstery, a three-spoke oldschool steering wheel and a lot more.

Finally, something to remind you of the good ol’ NFS Underground days

If you played Need for Speed Underground, you probably recall that Rob-Zombie-themed Nissan 350Z bonus car. Which seems to have played at least a subliminal role in creating this Scion x Slayer Mobile Amp tC.

The sick tC wears a black paint on the outside, while some stylized airbrushed blue-flaming skulls complete the hardcore look on the sides. Pentagrams, red-eye headlights, suicide doors and other sick enhancements make this FWD coupe look awesomely nasty.

Of course, since this is a music-themed car, portraying Slayer’s work, the car is equipped with one of the craziest custom sound systems containing towers of speakers, a custom mixer, a 32-inch monitor and the required amplifiers to plug a guitar and turn people deaf. All it needs are some engine mods and some underbelly neons.

Now, which one would you grab if the keys were laying around?
