Schumacher Wants No 3 Car Number from Rosberg

Michael Schumacher seems to take all details into consideration when preparing his Formula One return in 2010. According to the latest reports from the German media, one of his superstitions might lead to a number change between him and teammate Nico Rosberg for the upcoming F1 campaign.

Until now, the 41-year old German has become title winner in the Formula One Championship only with odd numbers on his car. His first two winning seasons at Benetton saw Schumacher drive a No 5 and No 1 car respectively, while at Ferrari he used to win with the No 3 and No 1. Consequently, he figured that if he really wants to become world champion again, he'll have to race with another odd number on his brand new Mercedes car.

As the first entry list for the 2010 Formula One series has been sent to the FIA before Schumacher was signed by Mercedes GP, the Brackley based team gave the No 3 spot to the only driver signed at the time, Nico Rosberg. However, once Schu was confirmed by Ross Brawn, the British team manager was asked by the German to switch number designation within the team.

Ross (Brawn) knows that I prefer to have odd race numbers,” Schumacher was quoted as saying to German newspaper Bild.

It appears that the change request has already been sent to the FIA by Ross Brawn, and the ruling body is to announce it in due time.

What's interesting about race number 4 is the fact that it never led to a world championship so far. In the entire history of the sport, the No 4 car was never driven by an eventual world champion, while also leading to only 7 race wins in the past decade (the statistics are courtesy of the GMM news agency). So we're curious if Nico Rosberg had any objections to the change...
