Schumacher to Debut Revised F1 Helmet at Valencia

Although Felipe Massa's helmet was actually what saved the Brazilian's life in his terrible accident during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, F1 helmet manufacturer Schuberth announced it will debut a revised model for the upcoming European Grand Prix, at Valencia.

According to the post-qualifying investigation conducted by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), it seems "the left visor mounting was knocked off" during the helmet's impact with the 800 gram steel spring at over 265 kph, as reported by the GMM news agency.

Whether this new model will be able to resist better to this kind of accidents, we're yet to find out. According to the in-house tests, the new model will be an improved version of Massa's initial carbon fibre Schuberth. And, according to the same report, it will be none other than Michael Schumacher who'll debut the new helmet.

As appeared in a media report issued by German newspaper Bild, Schu's new-generation helmet will be added a titanium disc to the mounting point. According to Schuberth's technical director Oliver Schimpf, the mounting is now twice as strong as before.

"Felipe's visor only came off when the doctors pulled on it, but we have inserted a titanium disc at the transition from the visor to the helmet where previously there was only plastic. It is a reaction to the accident," Schimpf was quoted as saying to the aforementioned source.

As an extra information - not that any of us would be interested in purchasing the new extra-resistant helmet for our everyday needs - the new Schuberth RF1 to be worn by Schumacher at Valencia will cost 12,000 euros.
