Schumacher Advises Vettel to Believe in 2009 Title

Michael Schumacher argued that both the constructors' and driver's races for the 2009 title are very interesting with 2 rounds to go until the finish line. While expecting the Scuderia to fight hard to maintain their 3rd spot in the manufacturers' championship – as Brawn GP and Red Bull have already clinched the top spots in the series – Schu believes Sebastian Vettel should not give up hope for a maiden F1 crown.

The Red Bull driver in now 16 points behind Jenson Button (and 2 behind Rubens Barrichello) in the drivers' race, and needs to score 2 wins in the closing 2 stages of the season to have a shot at winning the title.

However, according to Schumacher, every driver's philosophy has to be “it's not over until it's over”, which means Vettel should push hard to beat the Brawns for the title in the upcoming few weeks. Like history has taught us, 16 points is not an unbeatable lead going into the final 2 stages of the season (see Kimi Raikkonen's title a couple of years ago).

I think it helps to think of a fact which I was always sticking to during my career: It is not over until it is over; you have to fight until the end. At Ferrari, we live that experience very successfully since many years, and I am convinced it will be like this again this time,” said Schu on his personal site.

Sebastian as well will probably share this view because he still has the chance to win the title. This alone is already a big success. I am sure he will make everything possible to show a good performance in the next two races. Mathematically everything is still possible, and I will keep my fingers crossed for him,” added the 40-year old German.

In order to secure the 2009 title, Vettel has to win both the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while rival Jenson Button would have to cross the finish line in 7th place or (and) further down the pack. If equal-pointed, the Brit would be declared world champion, as he holds the record for wins this season (6).
