Schumacher Admits Rosberg Is Faster than Him

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher admitted that he is yet to match the pace of his much younger teammate Nico Rosberg in the 2010 Formula One championship. The 41-year old made no secret from the fact that he has to raise his game in qualifying in order to catch Rosberg, but insisted that things are a lot more equally balanced in the race.

I see all the details. True, with how the car behaves at the moment I am not driving at his level. At least not in qualifying. In the race it's very equal. I know precisely how I can change that fact - and I am working on it,” said Schumacher in a recent interview with Formula One's official website.

In the 12 rounds so far in 2010, Rosberg out-qualified Schumacher no less than 10 times, setting up one of the most dominating inter-team performances in the current season in qualifying. Additionally, the two are more than 2 race wins apart in the drivers classification – although none has actually won an event – with Rosberg leading Schu by 56 points.

Rosberg is also the only driver in the Mercedes GP lineup to have scored podium for the German team, managing to score Top 3 finishes in Malaysia, China and Great Britain.

Nevertheless, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has another view when taking a look at the statistics, arguing that Rosberg's better performances this season shows his desire to prove himself. While Schumacher has already won 7 world titles – and nothing less is expected of him from now on – Rosberg is yet to win a race in F1.

When people say that Nico Rosberg is faster than Michael I tell them Nico still has to prove himself. Not so Michael. For Nico fourth places are still important - not for Michael. Only winning is what counts for him. Whether he finishes fourth or 14th doesn't really matter for him…” said Ecclestone.
