If there’s something you want a kid not to do, just make sure you tell them they shouldn’t be doing it. Despite this age-old piece of wisdom, one school bus driver did just that – and all hell broke loose on the bus.
The video at the bottom of the page was recorded by bystanders and angry parents earlier this month. The school bus had just left the elementary school in Wichita, Kansas, and had pulled over by the side of the road because a few of the kids on it were misbehaving, the New York Post reports.
As you can see, it’s mayhem inside: kids are running back and forth inside the bus, and there’s loud screaming. At one point, a girl peers out the window and, spotting her mother by the bus, starts screaming at the top of her lungs to be let out.
It’s mayhem outside the bus, too. Parents are yelling at the driver through the closed doors, telling him to let their kids out. By the screams on both sides, you’d think there’s some kind of monster on the loose inside.
What happened in reality is that a bunch of the kids were being unruly and noisy. According to the school (which stands by the actions of the driver, by the way), it’s common procedure to pull over if kids are misbehaving and they’re a danger to the driver’s ability to… well, drive them safely from point A to point B.
What is not common procedure is for the driver to tell the kids they will be spending the night locked inside the bus if need be, if they don’t settle down. As noted above, that’s actually in the ABC of child-caring: you don’t try to scare a kid into behaving and you don’t refuse them access outside when they’re scared.
The report mentions that the school stands by the driver, but the parents are not having it. They way they see it, he grossly mismanaged the situation and something bad could have happened.
