Scheider Wins Maiden DTM Race in 2009, at Oschersleben

Timo Scheider finally gave the Audi fans something to cheer for on Sunday, as the reigning DTM champion scored his first win of the season at Oschersleben. The German manufacturer was to secure all podium places on Sunday, as Mattias Ekstrom and Martin Tomczyk managed to complete a safe race in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Although he started from 2nd on the grid, Scheider had no problem passing his fellow teammate Tom Kristensen for the lead until the very first corner. A few minutes later, race control announced the 40-year Dane had to pass through the pit lane for not lining up in his grid slot correctly and the penalty got him out of winning contention for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Audi 1-2-3 was not to be challenged for the entire day, while rivals Mercedes managed to secure the following 4 positions to the finish line. Paul di Resta went on to finish 4th overall, ahead of countryman and 2-time race winner this season Gary Paffett. The latter started the race from 12th place but slowly moved up the pack into 6th place with one pit stop to go.

He eventually overtook Canadian driver Bruno Spengler at the pits and decided not to push for 4th place, settling for 5th place. Maro Engel went on to secure 7th place thanks to Oliver Jarvis' Audi suffering from a puncture with 2 laps to go.

While battling for 8th place, Mike Rockenfeller's Audi slightly touched Alexandre Premat's and the two drivers had to call it a day – despite the former rejoining the track in 13th place later – leaving Jamie Green hoping for the last point at Oschersleben. It wasn't to be for the Mercedes driver, however, as Kristensen recovered well after a slow start and overtook the Norisring winner in the very last lap.

In the overall classification, Paffet still leads the DTM field, equal-pointed with Swede Mattias Ekstrom. Scheider's win on Sunday lifted him to 3rd overall, only one point behind.
