Scheider Wins at Barcelona, Makes Huge Step to 2nd DTM Title

Timo Scheider can now focus on his second consecutive DTM title, as the German driver won a comfortable race at Barcelona over the weekend to further increase his lead in the overall classification. Only a miracle would prevent Scheider from succeeding in his perfect title defense this year, as the Lahnstein-born driver is now 12 points ahead of nearest rival and Audi teammate Mattias Ekstrom with only 2 rounds to go.

The Audi driver made a champion-like effort at the start of the race and jumped from 5th place on the grid all the way into 1st place, using the outside line on Turn 1 to pass all those in front of him. Pole-sitter Tom Kristensen had to settle for 2nd place after the first corner and the pair went on to increase their gap in front of the field in the following laps.

Scheider and Kristensen eventually finished the race in the top 2 spots, while Martin Tomczyk made it an all-Audi podium in Spain due to a good pit strategy. His crew moved faster than Paul di Resta's and got him into 3rd place after the second pit stop, a position which he never let go until the finish line.

Di Resta would eventually finish the race in 7th place, as he was further passed by Gary Paffett, Bruno Spengler and Mattias Ekstrom. Audi's Alexandre Premat went on to clinch the last point-scoring position, less than half of second ahead of Oliver Jarvis.

An incredible weekend - and an incredible start. Of course after starting from fifth on the grid my goal was to attack Gary (Paffett) in turn one as best I could. But that I’d manage such a start and take the lead was unusual. After that, my pace and my car were very good,” said Scheider after the race.

We had two good pit stops. We clinched a nice victory, which is a very good feeling. And in the championship we’ve now got a lead of twelve points,” added the German driver.

Scheider now leads from 12 points to Ekstrom, while Mercedes' Gary Paffett sits in 3rd place, 14 points down to the championship leader.
