Scania and Brazil Partner for Alternative Fuel Industrial Engines

The quest for greener solutions does not stop with vehicle engines, as Scania and Vale Solucoes em Energia S.A. have signed an agreement to work together on the development of new technology for ethanol- and gas-powered industrial engines for the Brazilian market.

The plan is to develop cleaner single-speed engines for operations like generating electricity, driving pumps and compressors in machinery, for example in the mining industry and agriculture.

The Brazilian market for stationary engines in these segments is estimated at 3,000 engines per year, so a successful partnership between Scania and VSE has major commercial potential,” says Robert Sobocki, Senior Vice President and head of Scania Engines.

The Swedish, as part of the deal, will not only supply the engines  (Scania has more than 20 years of experience with ethanol-powered units), but also to help with testing and evaluating the new technology. Producing alternative fuels in Brazil will not be a problem, as the country has a large production of materials needed in the process, such as sugar cane. So such a policy will not come in conflict with the food production.

Vale Solucoes em Energia is a part of the Brazilian-based Vale Group, one of the world’s largest mining companies. VSE decided to get involved in the development of new technological solutions, in order to achieve a cleaner use of coal as well as renewable fuels.

The agreement between Scania and VSE was signed at Stockholm, in the presence of Sweden’s Minister for Enterprise and Energy, Maud Olofsson, and her Brazilian counterpart, Minister of Mines and Energy Edson Loao.
