For this edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Ford Motor Company thought that it would be alright to bring a red-painted Shelby GT500 from the 1960s. The display is a teaser for the 2020 model, which has been confirmed with “over 650 horsepower.”
Described as “the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever built,” the Shelby GT500 for the S550 generation of the Mustang will be presented on January 14th at the Detroit Auto Show. The secret to all this suck-squeeze-bang-blow is the Predator V8, an engine with 5.2 liters of displacement and a thumpin’ great supercharger.

Related but not quite the same with the Voodoo V8 from the GT350 and GT350R, the Predator uses a cross-plane design and runs a compression ratio of 10:1 according to the information we have on the engine. The supercharger system is believed to be an Eaton TVS with 2.65 liters of displacement, running 12 psi of boost.

There’s debate on the forums whether the Shelby GT500 will get a seven-speed DCT from Tremec, but based on videos of the newcomer accelerating from the carparazzi, a dual-clutch transmission sounds like it could do the job.

The Tremec TR-9007 DCT is believed to be the culprit, proven to 900 Nm (664 pound-feet) and 9,000 rpm according to the official documentation on the transmission. Developed for rear-wheel-drive applications, the TR-9007 is more than adequate for the torque of the Predator V8. For the time being, the Voodoo V8 is the torquiest engine in the Mustang, churning out 582 Nm (429 pound-feet) at 4,750 rpm.

Ford Performance chief engineer Ed Krenz confirmed that the GT350, GT350R, GT500, and F-150 Raptor would soldier on with pre-facelift exterior styling. The R&D budget is better suited to make these models go faster, not look different from the pre-facelift according to Krenz.

Even though Ford has a winner in the pipeline in the guise of the GT500, we can’t shake this feeling that Dodge will remain king of the hill with the Hellcat Redeye. The range-topping Challenger has 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque to offer, translating to 3.4 seconds to 60 mph and 10.8 seconds in the quarter-mile run.
