Sato Satisfied with Jerez Testing

Following his good run at the Jerez testing this week, Japanese driver Takuma Sato said he will wait for Toro Rosso's decision with the most optimism. He is currently eyeing an F1 seat for next season with the Faenza-based team, same as Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi and 4-time ChampCar winner Sebastien Bourdais. Sato recorded the second best time during both testing sessions attended this week, being outpaced only by potential teammate Buemi.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience with Toro Rosso and would like to thank the whole team for everything they have done for me. Over the three tests I have done with them, I have been made to feel so welcome and integrated into the team operations,” said Sato after the final day of testing at the Spanish circuit.

The Japanese veteran – aiming to start his 100th grand prix in Formula 1 next season – was out of action from as early as April 2008, when his team Super Aguri was forced to quit the sport due to financial problems. Since then, he has been offered the chance to test for Toro Rosso at Barcelona, setting the quickest time at the Catalan circuit in the November test meeting.

“Since my last race back in April I have been so hungry to race again and am so motivated to return. Now of course, I just hope that I will be given the chance to race with this great team next year. I feel that I am satisfied with the whole working process with engineers, mechanics and of course in the cockpit during the test - even after my long absence from F1, so hope it will be enough to convince the management for their decision,” added Sato.

With Buemi almost certain to secure one of the racing seats at Toro Rosso in 2009, the Japanese driver will most likely compete with Bourdais for a place in next year's F1 roaster. He therefore argued that money will count as much as his on-track performances when Toro Rosso will make their decision on who will partner Buemi next season.

“Private teams such as Toro Rosso are in the present situation under even more pressure that the manufacturers, so for them every sponsor is a gift. I have my money. My management has worked feverishly to find sponsors,” admitted Sato earlier this week.
