Santa Claus Gets Ticket for Having Double Parked in New York City

It appears that not even Santa Claus is spared from the parking rules in the Big Apple. As surprising as it may seem, retired teacher and community organizer Chip Cafiero was playing Santa Claus role in Bay Bridge, Brooklyn last Friday when the vigilant New York City traffic police issued an $115 ticket for having parked his car on two spots, Ridelust reported.

As a matter of fact, Santa was riding a horse-drawn carriage and was delivering toys and candy canes to kids in the area. His carriage was flanked by a Chevrolet Suburban which carried the gifts. The event was part of Borough President Marty Markowitz's campaign to encourage shopping in the area.

The police agent noticed the double-parked car and immediately issued a fine although Santa struggled to attract her attention. Cafiero realized he had double-parked but he was busy with handing out gifts to children.

"I saw this [traffic agent] jump out of her car and I said to one of my elves, 'She's going to give me a ticket" said Cafiero.

"The kids started crying: 'That's Santa's car! That's Santa's car!' But this grinch just went ahead and fined me anyways” added Santa. In fact, the 60-year-old retired school teacher puts on his Santa costume and the white beard to bring the Christmas Spirit on the New York's streets each year.

"We weren't blocking traffic. Can't these agents show a little common courtesy?" Santa added. And since Christmas spirit floats in the air these days, looks like he's not asking for too much.

State Sen. Martin Golden (R-Bay Ridge) who witnessed the event shares the same opinion since he labelled the fine as “ridiculous” and really unnecessary during such a busy season for Santa.

Unfortunately, Santa “will have to make a special trip from the North Pole to traffic court during his busy season” he said. Still, no court date has been set.
