Samsung Showcases the Bike Windshield That Checks Texts, Calls and Emails

Samsung's new windshields for motorcycles and scooters increase the safety of the riders while allowing them to interact with their smartphones in ways that are less hazardous. Using a phone while on two wheels exposes the riders to higher risks because it involves taking one hand off the vehicle's controls.

Now, the technology Samsung reveals is not new, and we're not looking at Star Trek-ish breakthrough gadgets. However, the way Samsung integrated the smartphone-based communications and interacting with the notification system is new, and it appears like the prototype might just work.

The main idea is that a communication module must be installed on the vehicle, or possibly built-in ex-works. It will connect wirelessly to the smartphone using a dedicated app, and it will relay the selected notifications on an HUD-like display.

The good thing is that the display allows the rider to check out these messages and, using bar-mounted buttons, he or she can even respond using predefined patterns. Text responses such as "I am driving" or "Call you back in 5 minutes" are expected to be among the several presets users can choose to reply.

Samsung's dedicated app can convey news about emails, voice calls, texts and even social messages that flash on the screen. This display is placed above the dashboard, thus allowing riders to keep the road in their field of vision while briefly checking out the messages.

Thanks to the contrasting color and bright, clear way of displaying these notifications, the riders should be able to receive the info by simply taking a brief peek at the screen.

It's not known at the time of writing whether Samsung has any serious plans for this interesting idea. Still, with the increasing use of smartphones in everyday life, we guess we're looking at a piece of a future that's not that distant.
