As announced at the official Samsung Galaxy S21 launch event earlier this year, Samsung SmartThings is getting support for Android Auto, and as it turns out, this new feature is rolling out as we speak.
Part of the latest app update now live in the Google Play Store, the Android Auto SmartThings support gives users the opportunity of controlling up to six devices right from the head unit, all without the need for touching their smartphones.
SmartThings could already be configured for Android Auto access via Google Assistant, but the recent update to version 1.7.59.23 adds native support for the car experience, so you’ll be able to see a dedicated app icon on the home screen. After tapping it, SmartThings provides access to the configured devices, which you can control with a single tap on the display.
Setting up SmartThings for Android Auto only takes a couple of minutes. After installing the latest version, run the app on your mobile device, and you should see a new Android Auto section providing you with options to configure the items you want to be listed in the car.
You can enable up to six devices to show on Android Auto and also enable scene notifications.
“Get a notification that lets you run a scene when you’re near this location. You’ll only get notifications while Android Auto is running and your phone is connected to your car,” Samsung explains.
Overall, the experience is as straightforward as possible, and this was Samsung’s purpose from the very beginning.
The company expressed its commitment to expanding its mobile services to the car at the Galaxy S21 launch event; it also revealed it plans to allow its new smartphones to double as car keys with integrated UWB support and a collaboration with several carmakers out there. This feature should arrive in the summer, as the project is currently being developed with partners in the automotive industry.
