Hybrid made their way slowly but surely into our daily lives, now so many manufacturers are offering a hybrid, if one was to buy a hybrid, the choice would be confusing.

Hybrid powertrains have made their way into some racing-oriented cars as well. So to is the case with a Birgham Young University team of aspiring engineers who have created the “Hybrid Blue” race car with which they have won this year’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Formula Hybrid event which took place at the New Hampshire Speedway.

The “Hybrid Blue” car is powered by an electric motor with only 100hp but with a mind-bogglingly huge torque output of 610Nm (460 lb ft). It is aided and charged by a small engine running on E85 (85% Ethanol, 15% Gasoline), which did such a good job that by the end of the 22.4km (14 mile) long endurance run, the battery was still at 75% capacity.

We think this is a great initiative, to encourage the development of greener race cars for tomorrow so that we will be able to enjoy motorsport even 100 or more years into the future.
