National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), the company that purchased Saab in June 2012, will resume production of the 9-3 midsize sedan in Trollhattan, Sweden. The vehicle was initially discontinued in 2011, eight months before the company filed for bankruptcy.
“Yes, we will start the actual production on Monday,” NEVS spokesman Mikael Oestlund told Automotive News Europe, without revealing initial output of the Trollhattan assembly plant. He added, however, that the new 9-3s will be powered by a turbocharged gasoline engine, while an electric version with a facelifted exterior will be introduced next year.
NEVS began testing the new Saab 9-3 in mid-September, when the first pre-production vehicles rolled off the company’s facility in Sweden.
The second-generation 9-3 was introduced in 2002 and was marketed with three body styles (four-door sedan, four-door station wagon and two-door convertible) and several engine, both gasoline and diesel.
