Somehow, over the decades, Ford’s Mustang not only developed a reputation for all the great things it brought to the automotive world but also for its propensity to crash at enthusiast meetings. These days, "pulling a Mustang" is easily understood to be associated with a car fail, and owners keep adding new and (sometimes) hilarious examples to the case files.
Most likely, this reputation was built on the fact that at Cars and Coffee events, onlookers swarmed at the entrance to see the participants make their exit. That meant there was both an abundance of less than skilled drivers as well as smartphone cameras ready to immortalize the moment for timeless Internet glory.
Now, that doesn’t mean other cars don’t crash during such events, nor that you need an enthusiast crowd for a Mustang fail. Sometimes all it takes is the vigilance of a Teslacam or two. But when a video featuring a couple of Blue Ovals gets posted to the IdiotsInCars subreddit, it’s pretty much obvious that things are going to get a lot different than certain Mustang drivers initially thought.
Although it’s rather hard to catch the entire action because of the location of the amateur videographer, it seems that a car meeting included a pair of Mustangs (a tuned S550 and a sleeper SN95, by the looks and speed of things) going for a little drag race. As always, we don’t condone such action when taking place on public streets and really hope the area was closed off for traffic because of the enthusiast meet.
The run initially looks quite enticing: the modern S550 gets the work cut out for it because the “grandfather” isn’t shabby at all. But our attention soon turns from the fourth-generation Mustang to witness the left lane competitor swerve out of control as if the driver thought the utility pole on the side of the road was the finish line.
No, it wasn’t. And it wasn’t a fireworks booth either, even though some might assume that—all those sparks were triggered by the sudden encounter between the wooden power pole and the chunk of metal that proved too much for the person behind the wheel.
