Ever since the W222 generation of the Mercedes-Benz was launched, almost if not all major automotive publications have pitted it either against a pre-determined set of ideals or other rivals from its segment.
Comparisons versus the BMW 7-Series, the Audi A8 and/or the Lexus LS are obviously prevalent and most of all expected.
Not from Auto Express though. No. They pitted the new “Sonder Klasse” (“Special Class” in German) against the Audi A8 and... the Range Rover. Yes. Because comparing fullsize luxury SUVs with fullsize luxury cars is totally normal.
Not that we mind the comparison's conclusions, but the Jaguar XJ would have obviously been the better choice when talking about British luxury in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class segment.
We're not going to spoil much from the results, but, as usual with most British car magazines, the nationalism is strong with this review as well. Sure, the S-Class won the comparo but Mercedes-Benz had apparently lost the luxury car category crown in Auto Express' annual New Car Awards with the W221 generation against the latest Range Rover.
