Even though the New York Auto Show would have probably deserved the Mercedes-AMG GT reveal more, especially since the 2014 edition is the 60th anniversary of the somewhat similar 300 SL Gullwing unveil, the launch of the S 63 AMG Coupe is most definitely the next best thing.
“The new S 63 AMG Coupé is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. We now also offer our new two-door with the optional, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive. We are thus continuing our all-wheel drive and model offensive on our largest single market, the U.S.,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Compared with the outgoing Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG, the new S 63 AMG manages to be no less than 65 kg (143 pounds) lighter, despite the addition of quite large amount of new features as far as safety and comfort go.

Powered by a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that delivers no less than 585 hp (577 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb ft) of torque, the newest AMG model can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in just 3.9 seconds in 4Matic all-wheel drive guise, while the rear-wheel drive version does the same feat in 4.3 seconds.

Despite the supercar-like performance and the amount of passenger comfort, the S 63 AMG Coupe, whether with 4Matic or with rear-wheel drive, is also the most fuel efficient model in its segment, with the NEDC fuel consumption sitting at just 10.1 liters per 100 km (23.2 mpg).

Even though it was launched in the Big Apple, Mercedes-Benz brought the European version of the new model, which will also get a rear-wheel drive version that is slightly-cheaper and a little slower than the aforementioned 4Matic.

This means that the awesome active tilt function that comes with the Magic Body Control system will not be available in the United States, where the model will be available strictly with 4Matic, ergo no Magic Body Control.

US pricing hasn't been revealed yet, but the expect the model to start deliveries in the Fall of 2014, along with the recently-unveiled GLA crossover/SUV and its 45 AMG version.
