A couple of days ago we were ready do get the Spring Brake party started earlier than planned when we heard that one of Europe’s most popular low coast airline is planning to integrate a cheap transcontinental service soon. A one way ticket from the US to Europe was supposed to be as cheap as $21, which obviously was something out of this world. Well, it turns out it truly was madness.
Like we said the last time we were reporting about this news, cheap flying services that would connect the two continents have always been some sort of a dream airlines have had, but none of them managed to make it come true so far.
Ryanair has been conducting low cost flights around Europe for a long time and is planning to expand those trips further, but when we heard they also want to connect the US with the old continent in five years time we felt that this really was a big deal. Unfortunately our fears proved to be right, since the airline recently released an official statement denying earlier rumors.
“In the light of recent press coverage, the Board of Ryanair Holdings Plc wishes to clarify that it has not considered or approved any transatlantic project and does not intend to do so,” the Irish airline said. Whether they will eventually open this kind of service in the future or not it’s hard to tell, but one thing is sure buying a new fleet of long haul commercial airplane doesn’t come cheap.
Ryanair is currently operating smaller Boeings, the 737-800s models, but in order to fly over the ocean they would need new aircraft like the 767 for instance. We’re talking about hundred-million dollars investments, so it’s no wonder they changed their minds.
Who knows, maybe they decided to wait for the world’s first global flight based on Solar Power to finish its trip or maybe they are hoping NASA’s experimental wing running on electricity will soon reach the market.
