After clinching the “Rookie of the Year” award in 2007, Hunter-Reay ended last season on a promising 8th place overall, while also scoring his maiden IRL win, at Watkins Glen. However, due to Rahal Letterman Racing announcing quit of the series due to the economic downturn, the 28-year old American was left without a job for 2009.
Although testing with HVM Racing in the offseason, Ryan was picked by George to partner Ed Carpenter at Vision Racing for the upcoming season. Considering his impeccable credentials, Huner-Reay could not have been left on the sidelines this year, as argued by George.
“The accomplishments that Ryan has achieved in the short time that he's driven in the IndyCar Series speaks to the kind of talent and ability he possesses. Rather than have him watching from the sidelines or driving against us, it only made sense to bring him into our operation for the 2009 season,” said George.
Needless to say, Ryan finally got a load off his chest after signing the deal, while immediately announcing new aims for 2009. If, until now, all he wanted was a racing spot for 2009, he is now confident he can challenge for race wins this season.
“This is a huge opportunity on so many levels. Throughout the off-season I have been relentlessly attacking this thing from every angle; my sincere appreciation to all involved. From a competition standpoint, Vision Racing has what it takes to win races and that's what matters the most. I cannot say enough about Vision's determination to put a competitive car on the track at St. Pete, despite the narrow timeframe,” said Hunter-Reay.
The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will take off this Friday, with the first Practice Session scheduled at 10.45 A.M (local time). The season opening race will start at 2.45 PM on Sunday, April 5th.
