Russia Won’t Let Tom Cruise Be Great, Plans to Send Actress to Space First

Blame the language barrier for the reason why this hasn’t been mentioned before: Russia is determined to be the first country to send an actor to space to shoot a film before America’s Tom Cruise gets a chance.

Earlier this year, NASA, SpaceX, and reps for Tom Cruise all confirmed what would turn out to be the biggest film announcement of the year: Cruise and director Doug Liman’s next film would be a $200 million project that would see them shoot scenes in space, on the International Space Station (ISS). Later on, it emerged that the duo would head out on the Axion Mission in October 2021 and that a third space tourist spot was still open.

Much ink, mostly of the virtual kind, was wasted on how this massive and definitely impressive project would turn Cruise into the biggest action movie of all time because he would become the first actor to shoot a film in space. And here’s Russia’s “hold my beer” moment.

Citing a recent Sky News report, IndieWire informs that Channel One and Roscosmos are actively looking for a woman who will shoot a new film called Challenge, also onboard the ISS but before Cruise gets there. The announcement for the casting call was made in October this year, and the search is now underway.

The project specifically calls for a woman who may or may not have acting experience, but should be Russian, aged 25 to 40, physically fit (think triathlon fit, not your regular “oh, I did half an hour of Pilates in my living room”-type of fit) and moderate-to-large breasts. That one is an actual request.

“A real superhero to go to the stars… at the same time as becoming a big international star,” the casting call says of the perfect candidate for the job.

Sadly, the report doesn’t offer more details on how casting is going or, for that matter, on the production itself. But one thing is clear: Russia’s out for Tom’s crown of the first actor ever to ditch the green screen and make a film in space.
